Art Gallery update

You are invited to visit the first Galleria show, "Elham/ Inspiration" before it closes this week. We will have a small closing reception tonight after school.
You are also invited to visit our next exhibition, "Watter Al Bahry, Egyptian Nature Photographer", which is opening next week.

"Elham - Inspiration" Exhibition

 

On Wednesday, March 18 at 3:15 PM, the new AISW Galleria was opened with an exhibition called “Elham (in English, Inspiration)”. This gallery space is a very exciting venture for the Art Department and our school community! To open the Galleria, we held an exhibit which showcased the work of a variety of artists and photographers on our school staff. The event lived up to the exhibition's name, and was inspiring for all. Dr. Walther Hetzer shared his excitement and vision for our new Galleria, including that he hopes that it will aid in keeping the arts as one of the signature elements of our school. With so much talent among our staff and students, that vision will not be hard to maintain!

The “Elham/ Inspiration” exhibition remains open until April 15^th. If you weren’t able to attend the opening, you are welcome to stop by! The Galleria is located next to Ms. Barbara’s room (235) on the 2^nd floor.

Collection Request - Newspapers

Grade 5 will be doing a project which uses a recyclable material. This is a great way to learn about conserving resources and also to make creative solutions for making artworks. For this project, we need old newspapers.

If you have any of these at home, please send them (clean please) to the art room. Thank you!!

Collection Request - Tuna Cans

Grade 4 will be doing a project which uses a recyclable material. This is a great way to learn about conserving resources and also to make creative solutions for making artworks. For this project, we need short cans such as tuna or cat food cans. If you have any of these cans or will be using one soon, please save it and send it in (clean please) to the art room. Thank you!!

 

Grade 4 Perspective Ornaments

Grade 4 made these paintings at Christmas time - I just didn't post them yet! Some were not yet finished until after the Christmas vacation.

These paintings show how Grade 4 artists learned to make objects in their paintings appear closer or farther away. They used overlapping, size variations, and place in the paper to make some of the Christmas ornaments appear far away.

Then, to make their ornaments appear round, they added shadows and highlights. They also varied the values of the paint.

Some artists added some interesting finishing touches, too. Can you find them?

Grade 2 - Symbols Project

I am so proud of the Grade 2 artists for making these beautiful "ancient" symbol drawings. They learned a lot and also added their own special ideas to complete this project.

For this project, they first had to study symbols from different ancient cultures around the world. Three ancient cultures that used symbols for writing were the ancient Egyptian, Mayan, and Chinese cultures. Grade 2 artists used some symbols from each of these cultures in their artwork.

 

Grade 2 artists also learned that a symbol is a simple picture which has a bigger meaning. They designed their own symbols to show important things about themselves. For example, I might draw a paint brush to represent creating artwork.

 

To make these projects look amazing, they learned blending and layering techniques for oil pastel. They also used a watercolor wash to paint the background. Some students used muted colors to create an effect that looks like old paper.
