Grade 1 - Stained Glass Windows

Grade 1 artists looked at stained glass windows like the famous windows of the Notre Dame de Paris. They also learned that there are contemporary stained glass artists. For example, they learned about an artist named Russell Joy from the USA who makes stained glass. See one of his windows below:

Stained glass windows need light to make their colors bright. They also need black lines which hold the pieces of glass in place. Depending on the design, they may need a variety of different shapes of glass. Grade 1 artists learned that in art, we call shapes either GEOMETRIC or ORGANIC. The regular shapes are called geometric, and the unusual or abstract shapes are called organic. Grade 1 artists tried making both these types of shapes in their own stained glass window paintings.

Grade 1 artists also mixed their own colors for these paintings, using the primary colors.
