Invitation for Submissions for the Galleria

Dear AISW families,
The following Galleria Show and Invitation are beginning this week. We hope you will stop by the Galleria to enjoy the artwork, and also to consider whether you or someone you know would like to submit work to be exhibited this year!!

At AISEW, we celebrate the arts in their various forms. We also celebrate our school community! Therefore, we are currently welcoming submissions for artwork from our community to be exhibited in our Galleria this year. We want to include a variety of artwork from our school staff and families, and possibly from the greater Cairo community.

We need you!! How can you help? If you are an artist, you can submit a body of artwork for exhibition. If you do not make art yourself, you can spread the word to current artists whom you know in your circle of family or friends, and invite them to make a submission.

Guidelines for Submissions:
What do I submit? Prepare a body of work – 10 or more artworks. Artworks must be ready to hang, either stretched on canvas or framed. However, if you need help, AISEW may have some frames. In addition, please prepare a short description of your work, including the type of artwork, dates created, titles of pieces, and theme or purpose of the body of work.

How do I submit?  Email Ms. Krista at kcary@aiswest.com. Include pictures of your artwork and the description mentioned above. Also include the time frame for when your work is available for display (for example: available for display Jan 5 through February 12). If your submission is accepted, you will be notified of when your work should be brought in to the Galleria.

When do I submit?  Submissions are being accepted until December 6. If you have further questions about submissions, please contact Ms. Krista.

Disclaimer: Please note that while AISEW does provide security measures at the Galleria, we cannot assume responsibility for any damage to artwork displayed.

Drawing Study by Brooklyn College in New York

AISW artists can participate in an exciting new study about drawing around the world this year! To do this simple and interesting study, they will draw their hand and Ms. Krista will take a picture of their drawing. If they are participating in the study, Ms. Krista will upload their drawing to the Creatubbles website. Then everyone can see their artwork and compare it to drawings from around the world!

Here is a letter from the Brooklyn College :

Ms. Krista will send a permission form to all parents soon. If you are a parent and would like to allow your child to participate, you will need to return the form and include your email address.
Thanks in advance to all who will participate!!!

ART is for EVERYONE!

AISW artists have worked together to create our awesome hallway sign! Come check it out. It displays a fun new theme for the year , "Art is for Everyone"!
Each student decorated a hand to add to the hall display.

AWESOME ART NEWS

Check out this exciting news from the art world:
Omar Kholief, born in Cairo, has recently been appointed Manilow Senior Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Illinios, USA. This appointment is a coveted position and shows that he is on the cutting edge of contemporary art! He is currently working for a gallery in London, and will move to Chicago in November.

This news is fun because MCA is one of my favourite museums, and only about 5 hours away from where I am from the in USA!

Art has taken this Egyptian all over the world doing creative things! He is a talented art curator. Egypt can be proud of him!

WELCOME to a new year in art!!

Dear AISE West Parent,

Hi, my name is Krista Cary and I am the Grades 1 – 5 Art Teacher at AISE West. I would like to briefly introduce myself and my art program. First of all, like any good art teacher, I love all kinds of art, especially painting! Plus, I am equally as passionate about passing my love of art making and appreciation for art in society on to my students. You might be surprised to learn that I also like desert camping, grow my own herbs, and have owned a motorcycle back in Iowa, U.S.A., where I am from.

I hope you are as excited as I am for a new school year, and in particular, for another great year of artistic growth for your child!  This year I will use the AERO Visual Arts Standards as a guide for my curriculum.  There will be a focus on purposeful experimentation as well as a continued emphasis on color theory and the elements and principles of design. Your child will learn to use the language of art to understand and evaluate artwork. In addition, your child will learn about the significance of art in cultural identity and history, and make connections to present day uses for art and creativity. It is my aim that through art, your child will develop confidence and the capabilities to think independently and solve problems creatively, which are essential skills in today’s world.

In order to create a positive learning environment, I have high expectations in my classroom. As before, I will expect all students to demonstrate the 3 R’s : Respect, Responsibility, and Ready to Learn. This year, I will also define CHAMPS expectations for each activity we will do. If a student is having significant trouble following the expectations, I will let you know, so that we can work together to create a solution.

I believe that if we work as a team, we can help your child to get the most from their art program at AISW. Please contact me at any time if you have concerns or questions about your child’s art education. I want your child to have the best experience possible and to gain new skills and confidence throughout the year. If there is anything specific I can do to help make this happen, please let me know.

This year, I have also designed some special ways that you and your child can be more involved and progress quickly in art.  First, I will assign a weekly art challenge, which students can work on at home. If your child completes and turns in the art challenge to me, I will post their work, either in the art room or on our classroom Instagram site, https://instagram.com/mskristasartists/. Also, I will use a classroom blog, http://mskristasartists.blogspot.com, to post updates and important information. For Grades 4 and 5 in particular, I will begin posting videos with classroom content as well. I highly recommend that your child watch these videos at home, so that they will have an advantage during art class. More information related to these “flipped art room” videos will be given to Grade 4 and 5 parents soon.

To a creative year,
Ms. Krista Cary

Grade 1 Landscapes

Grade 1 artists have completed landscape paintings that show perspective. They also used paint to create the illusion of texture in the parts of the landscape that are close up. Then they created their own characters to personalize their landscapes. Great job, Grade 1 artists! Look closely at these paintings to see which parts are close, medium, or far away, and also to imagine a story taking place between the characters!
